Dance in the Classroom

Dance is the expression of ideas through body movement.

Dance as medium for learning is engaging, inspiring, creative, and encourages social awareness – with students moving both individually and collaboratively.

It demands the mind to work in multi-dimensional ways to mentally and physically create and present moving conceptualised ideas in space, time, dynamics & relationships. (Dance Elements)

Dance is often misunderstood as a complex skill or gift that is learned through much training, but this is incorrect. Dance is an authentic state of body movement to express feelings, ideas and concepts in response to music, environment, stimulus or emotion.

It offers students the capacity to embody their experiences and ideas. As humans we are always using the human body to ‘read’ the world around us for personal, social, emotional, spiritual and physical communication. We are constantly using gesture and symbols to read social-emotional cues and understand our worlds – it is a language. Dance allows us an avenue to explore ourselves by using the language of movement to express our individuality.
